A solid oak rail carries the load, so the frame does not rely on the upholstery to stay square. Take out four bolts and the sofa becomes three flat panels — that is what makes a move survivable.
Seat depth is 62 cm, not 68. It is the difference between sitting and sliding forward all evening. The back is angled at 14°, which is what keeps a long conversation upright.
Three lengths, three covers, two arm widths. Covers zip off in under a minute, so a room can change without the frame being replaced.
The seat cushion sits on a breathable webbing deck rather than a solid board, so it does not go flat in month eighteen. Every cushion is the same size, so they can be rotated.
Solid FSC oak, recycled steel, wool. No MDF in the frame, no glue at the joints. Spares are kept for a minimum of ten years after a piece is discontinued.
Cut and joined in a workshop of eleven people who have made this model since 2018. We visit twice a year and publish what we find.
Brushed, not lacquered. The grain is left open so the oak takes on the room rather than sitting in it like plastic.
“We built it to be taken apart, because the part that fails is almost always one bolt and not the whole frame.”Design note · Spoke, 2021
FSC chain-of-custody number printed on the frame label. Recycled steel springs, water-based adhesive, wool blend cover. Every component is listed with its weight in the impact section, and none of it is glued shut.
